Welcome! Please use Chrome browser for this study. Note that this study can only be completed once per user. If you have participated before, you can not join in it again.
Task Instructions:
1. You will complete 55 simple math trials. Each trial contains three numbers, and you need to make a binary choice to decide whether the difference between the first two numbers is divisible by the third number.
Math Questions Examples:
• For the trial 49 ≡ 20 (mod 5): Calculate 49 - 20 = 29, then determine if 29 is divisible by 5. Select "No" because 29 ÷ 5 = 5.8 (not a whole number).
• For the trial 51 ≡ 33 (mod 6): Calculate 51 - 33 = 18, then determine if 18 is divisible by 6. Select "Yes" because 18 ÷ 6 = 3 (whole number).
2. During the study, you will see a progress bar showing your completed trials. You may or may not see other peer participants' progress bars, which come from our previous study results about other participants. Each completed trial adds one unit to the progress bar.
By comparing two progress bars updated in real-time, you can find the speed difference between you and other participants in progressing.
Progress Bar Examples (what you may see during the study):
6%
14%
3. Try to finish each trial as quickly as possible, but accuracy should be your priority rather than speed. In other words, when ensuring accurate answers, try to answer each trial as fast as possible.
4. Your compensation will NOT be affected by your performance in the study, but please be honest. Any abnormal behaviors, such as answering trials too fast or too slow or making random selections, will be detected and you will be reported to the Prolific data quality team. We also have attention checks during the study.
5. Before you start login, please ensure you are not interrupted during the study. You have to finish all trials at once, and you cannot pause or save your progress. If you leave the page without finishing the study, you will lose all progress and you will not be able to join in our study again.
